Leonard Rudofsky Center Construction Project 2007

Handi Kids Breaks Ground on Leonard Rudofsky Building

New facility to increase programming space for children with disabilities

September 28, 2006 marks the ground breaking on the Leonard Rudofsky Building honoring the memory of Lenny Rudofsky and his extraordinary dedication to Handi Kids.

The Leonard Rudofsky Building will significantly increase programming space for the approximately 1,000 children who benefit from Handi Kids’ year-round therapeutic recreational programs each year.  The facility will include a fully-handicapped accessible kitchen for a culinary vocational training program for children with disabilities, a performance stage in the Great Room for dance and theatre performances by children, an arts & crafts room for exciting new activities, a small movie room for educational movies and a much larger dining hall.

September 28th would have been Lenny Rudofsky’s 65th birthday.  A long-standing supporter of Handi Kids and a member of the Board of Directors, Lenny built the riding ring and barn for the therapeutic horseback riding program and assisted with many special events.  He was named “Man of the Year” in 1995.  A prominent developer and contractor instrumental in building many malls, office buildings, hotel properties and assisted living facilities in the region, Lenny died unexpectedly last year.

In fitting tribute to Lenny’s commitment to Handi Kids, the new building will overlook the fishing pond and has been designed by architects Arrowstreet Inc. to resemble a prow of a boat, for Lenny loved boats and being on the water.
